Review & Description

Millions of pets are adopted from shelters and rescues each year. A vast number of these pets do very well in their homes and live out their lives in this 'forever' home. But what about the matches that don't go so well? Countless owners have adopted pets only to find out later that the pet has major behavioral issues that they find difficult or are unable to live with.

This eBook explains the differences between a shelter and a rescue, how that information can affect the quality of pets available for adoption. Also included is information on foster homes, aggression screenings, matching pets with adopters, a list of questions to ask and how to interpret information given to set families up with the best advantages in today's animal welfare world.

About the author:
Joann Hughes, CPDT-KA is owner and operator of Pawsitive Pet Behavior, llc. She has been certified by the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers -- the only national certification program for professional dog trainers -- since 2004. She is also a professional member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).

Joann has been actively involved in training and behavior modification of companion animals specifically, dogs and cats, since 1998. She has devoted several years to the study of animal behavior, volunteering as an obedience instructor for a local shelter, fostering countless cats and dogs and providing behavioral support for shelters and rescues.

It was her experiences with her dog Bailey that spawned Joann's interest in training and, most specifically, behavior. Her first experience adopting a shelter puppy led to experiences that forever changed her life. Bailey had having serious behavior problems. It turned out he needed more than the love that the shelter volunteer said was all he needed. In this learning journey that spanned many years, Joann delved into the fascinating field of animal behavior.

Joann spent 10 years working in a shelter environment and has experience working with purebreds, mixed breeds, dogs acquired from reputable breeders and puppy mills as well as rescue and shelter dogs.

While working in the shelter environment, Joann fostered numerous dogs and cats - both long term and short term fosters. Her specialty was rehabilitating dogs and cats with fear issues and under-socialization. In addition, Joann also spearheaded a puppy-raising program at a local shelter where pregnant moms who would have otherwise been euthanized or had their litters aborted were set up in a stress-free environment and allowed to whelp their litters. She recruited, trained and mentored a large volunteer base to provide 24/7 care for eight weeks while focusing on the behavioral development of the puppies and matching those puppies with homes that best fit their personalities.

Joann also has extensive experience in evaluating shelter dogs and cats, conducting SAFER testing and the ASPCA's Meet Your Match Program for both cats and dogs.

She enjoys helping owners understand how to communicate with their pets, understanding their pet's individual needs and tailoring a training or modification program specifically for them.

Joann has also worked with rabbits, horses and birds specifically with clicker training.

Review & Description

How much of an impact can an animal have? How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can't even begin to answer those questions until you hear the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa.

Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director, Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility, (for a cat) and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most.

As his fame grew from town to town, then state to state, and finally, amazingly, worldwide, Dewey became more than just a friend; he became a source of pride for an extraordinary Heartland farming town pulling its way slowly back from the greatest crisis in its long history.

Review & Description

Two brave women prove that to live a real life adventure, they only need to take the first step. Giving into an urge to see the world, they take their cat and move onto a sailboat in California. After a year's preparation they set sail into the Pacific Ocean. Three months later they arrive in Florida after sailing 1500 miles down the Baja coast, across the Sea of Cortez, and driving an old pickup truck 2000 miles across Mexico and the southern United States.

When Kim, Jazzymyne and their cat leave Los Angeles, California on New Year's Day they have no idea where the wind will take them. Their second day at sea they are caught in a violent storm. They struggle back to land and upon attempting to anchor near an island off the coast of Mexico, Kim breaks her hand. Conflict looms when Jazzymyne tires of the hardships and wants to go home.

After twenty five days at sea they reach Mazatlan, Mexico and make plans to relocate in Florida. After loading all their possessions in a twenty-five year old truck, they head for Florida encountering dangerous mountain roads, military checkpoints and border patrol with their cat in the cab and a surfboard tied on top. Mixed emotions concerning this undertaking become solidified by the reality of life at sea, travel abroad and the wonders of nature. This is a true adventure without technical jargon and will delight readers of all ages.

Baldy the Eagle drops in and encounters Chorizo, the miniature dachshund in his very favorite fishing spot. Tension rises as it is observed by Herman’s family that the eagle is about to do something unexpected. Mr. White Paws not only has to reckon with himself but with Baldy too, about glen rules. The third book in The Spring Pond Series, “A Stormy Day at Spring Pond” features Herman the Turtle and Mr. White Paws the Cat seeing a bolt of lightening and hearing a piercing scream throughout the forest during a bad storm. A little girl and Chorizo, the miniature dachshund, visitors to the glen, are reported missing. Herman and Mr. White Paws take it upon themselves to search for them. Especially endearing is the plan Herman comes up with for Chorizo. The lesson learned is that it might be scary to help sometimes but it is an important duty to assist those in need. Review & Description

In this companion to her successful introduction to cat behavior Think Like a Cat, Pam Johnson-Bennett, the award-winning author and feline behaviorist, shows how adding another cat to your home does not have to be the start of a kitty apocalypse. Although cats are often misunderstood as natural loners, Johnson-Bennett shows how to plan, set up, and maintain a home environment that will help multiple cats—and their owners—live in peace. Cat vs. Cat will help readers understand the importance of territory, the specialized communication cats use to establish relationships and hierarchies, and how to interpret the so-called “bad behavior” that leads so many owners to needless frustration. Offering a wealth of information on how to diffuse tension, prevent squabbles and ambushes, blend two families, or help the elder kitty in your family, Cat vs. Cat is a welcome resource for both seasoned and prospective guardians of cat families large and small.

Review & Description

The Internet has provided us with many wonders, from skateboarding dogs to Chuck Norris facts. Over the past year, though, one sensation has dominated the Web: LOLcats. Here’s how it works: First you find a picture of a cat online, and then you add a caption that reflects the cat’s point of view. Just remember that although cats can speak English, their spelling and grammar is not so hot. Once you’re done, you have a LOLcat (laugh out loud cat).

Since its founding in January 2007, icanhascheezburger .com (named after the most famous LOLcat of all) has been the center of the LOLcat world. I Can Has Cheezburger? collects 200 LOLcats from the enormously popular site, some classic and some new, in glorious and glossy full color.

The book also highlights legendary LOLcat forms recognizable to fans everywhere (including “Do Not Want,” “Monorail Cat,” and “Oh Noes!”), and offers a guide to the finer points of LOLspeak.

Packed with witty and endearing images and published into a proven cat-egory, I Can Has Cheezburger? is sure to delight feline aficionados and Internet nerds alike.
